Every year I look forward to the back-to-school adventures of clothes and supply shopping, sports physicals, dance tryouts and all those enrollment lines..
While I didn’t always love the process I was very happy when that back-to-school day came..we took back to school pictures, we made sack lunches and we hugged goodbye. It has been a ritual for 20 years now.

But this year we are doing things differently.
Because of the COVID shutdown we feel like we need to slow down and let our family come first.
We are enrolling in online K-12 school. Quite a change from the smallish Catholic high school education they have been surrounded by, but this year is altogether different so we are going to roll with it. The oldest is far enough along in her degree program she is living on campus whether classes are virtual or online. The college freshman is probably going to take on-line classes this year–as I have a feeling everyone is going to end up online so we will just bypass all that madness.
This year I just want good enough. I will throw out all my preconceived notions about a new school year, my expectations for them and their grades and just hope that there is forward progress. I don’t expect any awards or certificates. Its 2020. That ship has sailed. Lets just make it through this and hope next year is kinder.

I have enjoyed having the kids home over the last few months so much that I’m not ready to let that go. This may be my way of keeping them close but its also a way to forge a little normalcy into a really chaotic year…and if that means hiking new hills, scouring riverbeds, or eating popcorn and watching Ferris Beuller’s Day Off at 10pm after quizzes and tests then that that’s ok with me.
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller (1986)
To start with I want to spend the first quarter of our school year discovering our local region-its geography and culture mostly. I have spent the last 40 years of my life in this state and I don’t feel like I have seen enough of it. A little research has turned up a lot of fun things we can do in a day. What a great way to start our adventure!
